Overview
Originally an abstractor was someone who created Abstracts of Title for properties from the Public Records, hence the name. Eventually the term was used for anyone who performed title searches directly from the Public Records and was synonymous with the term Title Searcher. Recently, due to so many Public Records being available on-line, the term Abstactor is often used solely to refer to anyone who does title search work locally and directly from courthouse records as opposed to remotely or through a Title Plant.
Although licensed in many nearby states, Abstractors are not regulated in Missouri.
