Overview

The state government system of Missouri is fairly typical of most states.

State Constitution

The fourth and last Constitution of Missouri, the state constitution, was adopted in 1945. It provides for three branches of government: The legislative, executive, and judicial.

Counties

There are 114 counties and one independent city in Missouri. St. Louis is an independent city. This should not be confused with adjacent St. Louis County.
