Since Missouri borders on the Mississippi River and the Missouri River runs through it, there are wetlands and riparian rights issues. The state claims to the mean high water mark. Missouri recognizes the doctrine of accretion. Title to property can be gained (or lost) by a gradual shift in the course of a river. Landowners along a river or stream have a right to the clear, uninterrupted flow of the body of water. The state and federal government regulate public access and use for navigable bodies of water.
